From a monofunctional wasteland to a multifunctional living and working quarter
The city of Berlin has still undergone the social and economic structural change from the traditional industrial city to the Technology-Service center. In Berlin there are total of 4,450 ha of Industrial area. The most of these area still remain as undefined wasteland in the city without any further uses and plans. 'Karlshorst' in the eastern Berlin, which has already lost its old function and name as previous industrial area from DDR, is an example of this.

In this Project the isolated mono-functional Qurter in Karlshorst West will be as a multifunctional living and working quarters integrated. Under the specific goals The main part of this Work would be the strategic transformation process of the total area. With the long-term goal the Process describes more specifically the methods such as revaluations of Existing buildings and Initiation of Project, in particular, by the use of existing buildings and activation with new uses and new construction in the focus area.

This flexible process shows clearly the temporal and spatial Flexibility. This flexibility means exactly no linear process but a dynamic Process, which in the course of time to the user and adapted to the socio economic situation can be. From the planning to implementation, as well as the new constellation of the user and distribution of different types of uses in this process is clearly classified and interactively organized. In order to maximize the value of uses and participation for a long term making the possibility of participation in this project is essential for the existing Citizens in the area and potential users in of the future. In each step, it is exactly described, When(implementation period) and ' How(Methods), by whom(constellation of the actors), Where (In which construction sites und Buildings) will be used, managed. This process as a platform will actively reflect the communal interests.
