Revitalizing an anti-aircraft tower
The anti-aircraft tower located in Vienna’s Arenbergpark has been abandoned for 70 years. The tower is still unused and isolated from public life. However, there have been many proposals to reuse the huge, vacant space inside the tower. This project deals with the emancipation of the forgotten space from its current unused existence in the bunker to a new defined role. The carelessness with which the anti-aircraft tower was handled over recent years triggers a process that aims to end the irresponsibility of the past. The project ends the irrelevance and oblivion of the tower space. Therefore, the space breaks out of its concrete shell, cutting through the hierarchy of the bunker. The structure of the space inside of the bunker expands and finally escapes from its darkness and closeness. The emancipation process thus becomes spatialized and dynamic. With increasing height, the volume rises and abandons its repulsive appearance. People are attracted by this new and thrilling structure and adopt the tower as a shared urban property. The new space is made of a filigree steel structure that contrasts with the bold appearance of the existing bunker. The static spaces of the bunker combine with the new dynamic structure, complementing each other and creating a public venue for experimentation in art and culture. Visitors encounter a growing structure, providing the impression of a space becoming more and more vibrant and flexible. They finally find themselves in an open space that seems to dissolve itself. Suddenly, emancipation becomes realizable.
